The Friulian tableland, in the shelter of the pre-Alpine arc, is characterized by a natural landscape of remarkable originality. It is an area formed by the floods of the rivers, which over the course of thousands of years, deposited enormous quantities of calcareous and dolomitic material. The whole tableland is formed from alluvial soil, rather coarse in the northern part of the DOC area, becoming finer as the rivers follow their courses. As well as having generated the soil of the Grave, the mountains give protection from the cold north winds. This, together with the beneficial effect of the Adriatic sea, has contributed to creating a climate which is particularly favorable for growing vines.
